[Greetings to military brethrens from Kalyanji and Anandji. You must have been listening to our songs for several years courtesy Vividh Bharati. Till now, we have composed music for more than 100 movies. I categorise these songs in three categories, viz Homeopathic, allopathic and ayurvedic. Now you may be thinking that it is some doctor who is presenting Jaimala. Let me explain about these three categories. Homoeopathic songs are those about whose fate we are not sure at the time of creating them. Allopathic category songs are those which may sound nice in the beginning but whose effect may wear off with passage of time just like allopathic medicines are known to have their side effects. And the third category of songs are ayurvedic songs. The songs falling under this category are those who may not sound nice in the beginning but they begin to sound nice as time passes. When Manoj Kumar was producing the movie "Upkaar" then the situation arose for a similar song that needed to be picturised on Pran. Till then, Pran was not known to sing songs in movies, as his roles used to be of serious nature. "Upkaar" was the first movie in which he sang on screen. Manna Dey sahab has sung this song so beautifully that one does not feel like this song is a plaback song.]

When I continued getting her phones repeatedly for 3-4 times, then I began to smell a rat. So when she came to my residence a fourth time,

[Mughal e Azam was a memorable movie of K.Asif. There was a situation in this movie where emperor Akbar celebrates the birthday of Lord Krishna. Asif sahab told me that he desired a song for this situation that should be able to create the atmosphere for the occassion. I composed a song, got it recorded and made him listen to it and he liked it immensely. Then I requested him that the dance on this song should not be choreographed by some filmy dance choreographer, but it should be picturised on some classical dancer. Then he told me to search for such a person. I introduced K.Asif to Lachchu Maharaj, a renowned Kathak dancer. When Asif Sahab made him listen to the song, he began to cry. Asif Sahab got disturbed. He said that it was a dance song, and where was the scope for crying in this song ? Even I was at a loss. Then Lachchu Maharaj told us that his father used to sing exactly the same song and this song reminded him of his late father. Here is that song from the movie Mughal e Azam.]

I took appointment with him and reached his home. I told him that I had come to tell him that I liked the two ghazals of that movie very much and that these two compositions of him were better than my entire compositions. Hearing this Madanmoha embraced me and began to cry. He told me that I was too senior compared to me and he was my junior. I tld him that facts were facts, and that I would say that publicly too. a few days later, I said the same thing to public and media in a function organised by a gramophone company.]

Mahboob Khan signed me up to compose music for his movie "Andaz" and the task of choosing the playback singers was also entrusted on me by him. [Four years ago, whe we had gone to the hills of Kashmir and Ladakh during the shooting of the movie "Haqeeqat", then we had med many of your military brethrens.After the shooting, when I had to urgently leave Ladakh,then a few military brethrens helped me out a lot. I was unable to thank them at that time, and I never got an opportunity to thank them even later. [ I am reminded of those cold winter days when I used to listen to songs on loudspeakers while being seated under the hills and I used to wonder if a day would come when other people would listen to my songscoming out of these loudspeakers. Indeed that came came, but shall I tell you something ? I had a life of comfort and relaxation with you, but that is not the case now. Well, let us leave this topic. Once I alongwith Laxmikant Pyarelal were going to Chembur ( R K Studio of Chembur) in a car to sign the contract of the new Raj Kapoor movie called "Bobby". I asked Laxmikant whether "Bobby" was the name of a boy or a girl. He said "no idea". Just then I thought the first few lines of a song that would suit "Bobby"  whatever the gender of "Bobby" may turn out to be. When I made Raj Kapoor listen to it, he liked it and this song was included in the movie]

Jab yeh geet banaa to saawan ke baadlon ki tarah kaafi shor machaya.

[After writing the "mukhda" of a song of the movie "Milan", I fell ill. The doctor forbid me from going out of my home. Therefore I called Laxmikant Pyarelal to my residence. It was a sight worth watching. I was bed ridden, while Laxmi Pyare were explaining the meter of the song to me, and the doctor was breathing down my neck, while I was thinking about the lyrics of the song. When this song got created, it made quite a noise , not unlike  rain clouds.]

[Lata Mangeshkar needs no introduction, but I am still tempted to say a few words about her. I would just say that we are fortunate to have an artist of her calibre among us. Listening to her voice makes us feel like writing beautiful songs and composing great music in order to make the most of her voice. Sometimes she asks me about how to pronounce certain words. I tell her that however she pronounces that word would be treated as the proper pronounciation of that word. She pronounced even Punjabi words so beautifully as if it is being pronounced by a Punjabi female. You may have guessesd the song by now-- it is Bindiya chamkegi.]

[My Military brethren,my greetings to you all. I am very pleased that I am presenting some songs for you courtesy this programme. I am meeting you from a distance through Vividh Bharati. I have personally witnessed the difficult circumstances in which you live from nearby, when I had had personally gone and visited you during Indo-Pak and Indo-China war.During Indo-Pak war, I had visited you alongwith Sunil Dutt and Nargisji. When we boarded the military helicopter to reach Leh, the capital of Laddakh,we noticed that sacks of rations and cattles were loaded in the rear of the helicopter. The cattles were then being airdropped through parachutes. Anwar Hussain, the brother of Nargisji commented that probably we would also be air dropped through parachutes likewise.When we arrived Leh, we were informed that the oxygen level there was very low thanks to the place being at a high altitude. Therefore we were advised to go about our activities at a slow pace, else we would risk feeling dizzy. When the shehnaayi player played his instrument and played a high note, the note continued to remain high. Ab main aapko ek doosri border, Indo-Chinese border, ka ek kissa sunaata hoon, jab hum Nathula pass ke kareeb aap logon ke liye programme karne gaye the. Is baar Kishore Kumar mere saath the.Prograame khatam hone ke baad Kishoreda ne kaha ki jab itne door aaye hain to border dekhkar hi jaayenge. Army ke officers ne bataya ki woh kaafi khatarnaak jagah hai, barf se dhaka hoga aur border ka koi clear demarkation naheen hai, sirf Pt Nehru ki ek statue haijise seema samajh liya jaata hai. Par Kishoreda ke zid ke aage unhe jhukna padaa aur hum sab border dekhne gaye. Wahaan pahunchkar Kishoreda ko kya soojhi, woh oonche suron mein gaane lage. Chinese soldiers jo pahadi ke dhalaan waale side mein the, bandook taakar upar aa gaye. Hamare PRO ne mike par chillakar kaha ki yeh fauji naheen hai, kalakaar hai. Phir unhone Kishoreda ko samjhaya ki kuchh bhi ho sakta tha. Humein yeh ahsaas huya ki kya cheez hoti hai yeh border. Jab Kishore Kumar ki baat chal hi padee hai to kyun na meri film Pavitra Paapi ka yeh geet sun liya jaaye.

[ Now let me tell you a tale about another border, viz Indo-China border, when we had gone near the Nathu La pass to perform a programme for you. This time Kishore Kumar was with me. After the conclusion of the programme, Kishore da said that now that we had come this far, we should as well see the border. Army officers advised us that the border was a very dangerous place,which was covered with snow and there was no clear demarcation of the border either. There is just a statue of Pt Nehru which is treated as the border.But they had to bow before the adament Kishore da and we all went to see the border. After reaching there, I do not know what Kishore da felt like, he started singing in a high voice. Chinese soldiers, who were on a lower level of the hills, came out training their guns. Our PRO shouted at the microphone that these were not troops but artists. Then they couselled Kishore da that one needed to be careful there. Then we realised how sensitive a border can be. Now that I have been talking about Kishore Kumar, then we may as well listen to this song from my movie Pavitra Paapi.]

Mere fauji bhaiyon, Shaheed Bhagat Singh ke jeevan par aadharit ek film Manoj Kumar ne banayi thee, maine usmein geet likhe aur sangeet bhi diya tha. yeh meri khushnaseebi hai ki Bhagat Singh ki maa se milne ka ittefaaq huya. hum us gaaon mein gaye the jahaan Bhagat Singh ki maa rehti theen. Unse hum log mile aur Bhagat Singh ke jeevan se juDee kai baaten unhone humein batayeen. Unki ek baat jo mere dil ko chhoo gayi, woh yeh tha phaansi se ek din pehle woh apne beTe se milne jab ‘jail’ gayeen to unke aankhon mein aansoo aa gaye. tab Bhagat Singh ne unse kaha ki “maa, mat ro, agar tum royogi to koi bhi maa apne beTe ko qurbaani ki raah par naheen bhej paayegi”. isi baat se prerit hokar maine is film Shaheed mein yeh geet likha “tu na rona ke tu hai Bhagat Singh ki maa, marke bhi tera laal marega naheen, ghodi chadhke to laate hain dulhan sabhi, hanskar har koi phaansi chadhega naheen”

[My dear Military brethren, Manoj Kumar had produced a movie based on the life of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. I wrote the lyrics as well as composed the music in that movie. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to meet the mother of Bhagat Singh. We met her and she told her about many facts associated with Bhagat Singh's life. One fact that touched my heart was that when she went to meet Bhagat Singh one day prior to the day of his hanging, she had teras in her eyes, and seeing that, Bhagat Singh told her-"Don't cry, Ma. If you cry then no mother will have the courage to sent her sons for martyrdom." Inspired by this episode, I wrote this song in the movie-" tu na rona ke tu hai Bhagat Singh ki maa, marke bhi tera laa marega naheen, ghodi chadhke to laate hain dulhan sabhi, hanskar har koyi phaansi chadhega naheen". ]

[In this same movie, there was another song written by me that had become very popular- "Mera rang de basanti chola". The colour basanti (saafron) is for martyrdom. O ma, colour my garments in saffron colour, I have to go and get martyred for the sake of the nation, that is one aspiration that I have, so colour my garments in saffron colour.]

main apni ‘graduation’ poori kar Indian Peoples Theatre Association (IPTA) se juD gaya, ‘communist’ ke khayaalaat the mujhmein. Punjab mein main iska ‘founder member’ tha.Maine ek ‘troupe’ banaayi Pt Ravi Shankar aur Sachin Shankar ke saath milkar aur hum Punjabi mein karyakram pesh karne lage poore desh mein ghoom ghoom kar, aur apni sanstha IPTA ke liye chanda ikattha karte zaroorat-mand logon ki seva ke liye. par 1947 mein ‘riots’ shuru ho gaye aur hamaare ‘tours’ bhi band ho gaye. chanda ‘collect’ karna bhi band ho gaya. Humne faisla kiya ki theatre ko band kar diya jaaye. Theatre band hone ke baad filmwaalon ne bulaaya. Meri pehli film thee Bombay Talkies ki Ziddi. Usmein ek geet tha “Chanda re jaa re” jise Lata ne gaaya tha. Us samay Lata bhi nayi nayi thee. Yeh Mahel film ke pehli baat hai. Yeh geet mere career ka ek landmark geet tha aur Lata ka bhi. is ‘contract ke khatam hone ke baad maine Anil Biswas ke liye kayi filmon mein gaane likhe jaise Lajawab, Tarana.

[ After finishing my graduation, I had got associated with Indian Peoples Theatre Association (IPTA),I was "communist" in my views. I was its founder member in Punjab.I created a group along with Pt Ravi Shankar and Sachin Shankar and we began to present our programmes in Punjabi all over the country, and we began to collect subscriptions for our organisation IPTA to be used for helping out needy people. But riots broke out in 1947 and our tours had to be halted. Collection of subscriptions also came to an end. We decided to close down the theatre. After closure of the threatre, movie world beckoned. My first movie was Bombay Talkies' "Ziddi". There was a song in that movie-"Chanda re ja re" which was sung by Lata. Those days even Lata was a newcomer. This was before the movie "Mahal". This song was a landmark song for me as well for Lata. After this contract was over, I wrote many filmy songs for Anil Biswas in movies like Lajawab and Tarana.]
