[There is another song in this movie which I created as an experiment. The special thing about this song is that not a single musical instrument has been used in this song, but no one was able to detect that. Mughal-e-Azam, K.Asif ki yaadgaar film. Is film mein ek situation aaya jismein Samrat Akbar Krishna Janam manaa rahe hain. Asif sahab ne mujhse kaha ki woh is situation par ek gaana chahte hain jismen woh jhalak woh maahaul paida ho. Maine gaana banaya, record karwaya aur unhe sunaya, unhe bahut pasand aayi. Tab maine unse request kiya ki is geet ke picturisation mein jo dance instemaal hoga usey aap kisi filmi dance director se nahin balki ek classical dancer se karwaiyega. Unhone kaha ki phir aap hi dhoond laayiye. Maine Lachchhu Maharaj ko Asif sahab se milwaya, jo Kathak ke ek naami kalakaar the. Asif sahab ne unhe gaana sunaya, to woh rone lag gaye. Asif sahab pareshaan ho gaye, kehne lage ki yeh to dance ka gaana hai ismein rone ki kya baat hai. Mujhe bhi samajh naheen aa raha tha ki kya baat ho gayi. [Mughal e Azam was a memorable movie of K.Asif. There was a situation in this movie where emperor Akbar celebrates the birthday of Lord Krishna. Asif sahab told me that he desired a song for this situation that should be able to create the atmosphere for the occassion. I composed a song, got it recorded and made him listen to it and he liked it immensely. Then I requested him that the dance on this song should not be choreographed by some filmy dance choreographer, but it should be picturised on some classical dancer. Then he told me to search for such a person. I introduced K.Asif to Lachchu Maharaj, a renowned Kathak dancer. When Asif Sahab made him listen to the song, he began to cry. Asif Sahab got disturbed. He said that it was a dance song, and where was the scope for crying in this song ? Even I was at a loss. Then Lachchu Maharaj told us that his father used to sing exactly the same song and this song reminded him of his late father. Here is that song from the movie Mughal e Azam.]

Maine ek baar radio sun raha tha, usmein bahut hi dilkash ghazal aa rahi thi, film thi Anpadh, ghazal ke bol the “Hai isi mein pyar ki aabroo”. Maine music director ka naam pataa kiya, marhoom Madan Mohan
sahab. Maine unse appointment liya aur unke ghar pahunch gaya. Maine unse kaha ki main yeh kehne aaya hoon ki aapki Anpadh film ki yeh do ghazlen mujhe bahut pasand aaya, aapke yeh do ghazlen ek taraf aur
mere saare gaane ek taraf. Yeh sunkar Madan Mohan mere gale lagkar rone lage, kahaa ki aap mujhse kaafi senior hain, main to aapka junior hoon. Maine kahaaki naheen, jo sach hai woh sach hai, aur main
yeh sabke saamne bhi kahoonga. Kuch dino baad ek gramophone company ke jalse mein press aur poori public ke saamne maine yahi baat kahi.

[Once I was listening to radio. I heard a wonderful ghazal. The movie was Anpadh, and the song went “hai isi me pyaar ki aabroo.” I enquired about the music director, it was Madan Mohan. I took appointment with him and reached his home. I told him that I had come to tell him that I liked the two ghazals of that movie very much and that these two compositions of him were better than my entire compositions. Hearing this Madanmoha embraced me and began to cry. He told me that I was too senior compared to me and he was my junior. I tld him that facts were facts, and that I would say that publicly too. a few days later, I said the same thing to public and media in a function organised by a gramophone company.]

Mehbbob Khan ki film Andaz ke liye unhone mujhe music director chuna aur unhone playback singers chunne ka zimma bhi mujhe hi saunpa. Maine heroine Nargis ke liye pehli baar Lata Mangeshkar ki awaaz chuni. Mehboob sahab kehne lage ki Marathi zabaan ki ladki hai, kya yeh urdu zabaan ke shabd theek theek bol paayegi? Maine unse kaha ki yeh meri zimmedaari hai aapki naheen. Uske baad we bilkul chup ho gaye. Maine Lata ko khoob rataaya, achchhi tarah se seekhaya bina dhun ke. Maine usse kaha ki pehla take

[The lyricists and shayars of those days wrote wonderfully well. Pandit Pradeep, Sahir Ludhianvi, Shakeel Badayuni, Majrooh Sultanpuri. They do not make songs like Pt Pradeep’s “Aao bachchon tumhe dikhaayen jhaanki Hindustan ki” and Shakeel’s “Insaaf ki dagar pe bachchon dikhaao chalke” these days. Mahboob Khan signed me up to compose music for his movie “Andaz” and the task of choosing the playback singers was also entrusted on me by him. I chose the voice of Lata for the first time for Nargis, the heroine.Mahboob sahab said that she was a girl of Marathi speaking background and he wondered if she would be able to pronounce Urdu words properly. I told him that ensuring proper pronounciation from her was my responsibility, not his. Then he fell silent. Then I made Lata cram the words, and I trained her thoroughly without music. I told her that her first take musy be OK since I had staked my reputation by telling everyone that her first take was going to be OK. Lata lived upto my trust and the result is before you.     Lovely one again.
    Listening to songs like “baalaam aaye baso” and “uthaye jaa” is so nice. Transports you to a different world.
    Also, I was hearing that “experimental song” of Naushads’ from Uran Khatola “more saiyan ji” for the first time. I really liked it a lot.
